DC Connectors in Adapters

09/22/2009 4:16 AM

"Cigarette" and "Air" type of DC connectors in adapters. My laptop has the DC output connection that looks like a hollow pipe with a pin jutting out from the centre. What is this connector called?

No special name, AFAIK. It's just a miniature DC power connector. I believe Dell use one with a plug OD = 5.5mm & pin diameter 2.5mm, like this.

I've heard 'em called 'Roker' plugs, but that was long long ago, far far away.

A google search for "roker plug" got 9 hits - 4 of which referred to the connectors in question. Del gets a GA (for having a memory that works).

Interesting... I've never heard the term "roker plug". A Google search for "roker plug" from here in the USA produced only one hit referring to those plugs - a JG something company.

Most of the rest were 'plugs' of/for TV personality Al Roker.

To the Original Poster: Before the advent of the wonderful MagSafe™ power connector, most Mac laptops had a power connector that fit your description, but a closer examination would show that the center 'pin' is actually three concentric connectors. This is also called a coaxial power connector, as mentioned by a previous post.

zasmine,

(I am presuming that you are referring to your laptop having a DC input, as opposed to output)

The connector in question is referred to as a "coaxial DC power jack", and the mate is the "coaxial DC power plug".

The different size plugs and mating jacks are referred to using letter designations: For specifics, check with either Mouser or Newark electronics....
