CT Dimensioning K Factor

Dear all,

For CT adequecy check i have calculated the required kneepoint voltage of a CT as per the formula given below (For AREVA Micom relays, formulas used as per AREVA manual)

Vk required = k*(Rct+2Rl)

where k=0.14*(If*X/R) {when (If*X/R) less than 500}

k = 70 {when (If*X/R) greater than 500 but less than 1200}

In our case i have calculated the If*X/R value as per the Data available and it goes beyond 1200(1205 for 1 application and 1630 for other application)

In this case what will be the 'K' value.

Please guide me.

where

If -max through fault current.

X/R - X/R ratio.

Rct - CT secondary resistance.

Rl - lead resistance.

Dear Nagarajan,

For which applicaton you get such a high value of If * X/R . probably you would have have made some mistakes . Please note that the "IF" refres to the through fault current and not the bus fault current . In my experience only reactors will have high value of the X/R but in that case the If will be smaller and the product will be again less than 1200

Actually the switchgear is 22KV, 3Phase, scc 40kA for 3 secs. For this switchgear the incoming supply is from 22KV switchgear which is feeding from 5 nos of 25.6 MVA GT units. The fault current and X/R values are given by customer and these values found true.

In this case you have to take the fault current of the GT and its X/R ratio for the calculation . If you dont have the combined value of the X/R ratio of GT unit , then it must be calcu;lated and you will defenitly see that the Product is less than 1200
