I'd use either one of the bearing bronzes or a plastic.

Crank rotates and Connecting rod's big end is linked with crank pin. Small end of connecting rod is connected with piston rod. Cross-head is the special element used for this connection. It is special incense, it has to accommodate the linear movement of piston rod, accommodate the arc-wise movement of connecting rod small end joint with this cross-head and accommodate the linear sliding movement of the this entire assembly.

This assembly is typical for steam engines, IC engines and compressors as well. Have closer look at my 'avatar' which might explain this assembly in motion.

This is a very general description of this cross-head assembly. What else in specific you would like to discuss in detail?

If I was building this myself, I would look into the linear ball bearings, as used on punch presses.

The crosshead slides on the slide bar(s).

The piston rod and the connecting rod are connected with a pivoting bearing.

The lubrication arrangements will differ.

How about a chat with the Honorary Locomotive Superintendent at the local heritage steam railway?
