2001 Camry: No engine response from pedal.

09/26/2009 2:57 AM

I believe the Throttle Position Sensor is bad. What is the best way to change it? Is it a simple replacement ? Or do you need some calibration ? I hope it is attached to the Intake. Thanks for all your help!

It should be a straight in out replacement.
It will probably take you longer to locate it than to change it.
(In the unlikely event of any calibration being needed the engine management system (EMS) should take care of it, especially if you dissconnect the battery overnight, that might help the EMS to reset to default values)

Replacing the TPS is not that difficult but it must be Calibrated after it is installed. The tps is located one the side of the throttle control plate. If the throttle does not function with the pedal then that will not necessarily be the cause of this problem as the Camry uses vacuum to operate the throttle. I would check for any DTC that may be set before I started changing out parts are you could end up spending a lot of money on useless part replacement.

1 Check and make sure that there is not a fuse blown as this is a electric over vacuum system.

2. Opposite the TPS is the throttle actuator it will have a vacuum hose attached and check that the vacuum hose is not split or damaged in any way.

3. If vacuum hose is good then take a vacuum pump and attach it to the throttle actuator and see if the throttle plate will open when you apply a vacuum to the throttle actuator. If it doesn't move then the throttle actuator is bad and will have to be replaced.

I just remembered that I had a car one time that would not respond to the pedal and we found that the throttle plate was hung and the vacuum could not develop enough force to break it free and we found that when we loosened the throttle assembly and it had shifted just a small amount and that was causing it to hang, once we re centered the assembly the throttle worked perfectly.

Hope this helps you to solve you're problems.

What evidence suggests to you that the TPS is defective?

Have you examined the vehicle's data stream statically and dynamically?

Have you checked for specific trouble codes?

Simple answer (for those without shop/dealership facilities AND know-how): It's not a DYI task - either diagnostic or TPS fault repair.

Also, "not response from pedal" (while intuitively "seems-right") is not typically a TPS-fault failure mode. More typically: Engine "start-stall"...progressing to engine "no start." (Sensing of throttle position - without slop - ... critical for computer monitoring/control...not so much for throttling, don't you see.

Before taking it to repair shop...go to first intuitive (KISS solution place): pedal-to-throttle cabling/linkage. (Your statement that...no engine response indicates that car just sits there idling but is not drivable (can't accellerate)...or can't slow down other than with brakes and engine kill (or running into something).

Final update. As it turns out my daughter left the lights on. When she had college security help jump the car it must of blown a fuse that was under the hood. The schematics only list it as CPS. After checking all the fuses this last fuse was blown. I replaced fuse and accelerator work normally. Thanks everyone for your help.

Update appreciated. Thanks from (I presume) all of us.

Advise daughter read manual on how (and, inferentially, how not) to receive or give boost with battery jumper cables; never leave it to KK (Kampus Kops) and such.

CPS: sounds like "computer protection system"...blows fuse to interrupt over current (thus isolating computer criticals) due to battery boosting done incorrectly...or correctly(?). (If fast blow fuse, it could be due simply to a momentary bump or misplacement of cable clamps.)
