Gauge into Thickness

09/27/2009 6:16 AM

Hi everybody,

Can you teach me on how to calculate or compute galvanized steel thickness if I know only its gauge.

Thanks.

See this table.

Took about 15 seconds to find using Google, including typing the search term.

If you need to know the thickness including galvanization layers, consult a supplier (the thickness may vary).

Just like asking how to solve the hypotenuse and you gave me the formula of pythagorean theorem. What i mean is I need the proof on how to derived on those thicknesses based on its gauge.

That's like asking " prove that a #8 woodscrew has a shank diameter of 0.164in ".

There is no proof - it is so by definition.

A bunch of guys got together & decided on a scale of sheet metal thicknesses - just as another bunch of guys deliberated about woodscrew dimensions.

Just accept it.

"Just like asking how to solve the hypotenuse and you gave me the formula of Pythagorean theorem ..." - what would've been wrong with that?

[Except that asking how to solve the hypotenuse is nonsense - a hypotenuse cannot be solved. It is like asking how to solve the brick. I suspect you meant "how to solve for the hypotenuse ..."]

"There is no proof - it is so by definition."
Absolutely right.

"The gauge number selection is arbitrary, there is no equation that can translate gauge number into thickness."
