Valorization of Mineral Oil from Old Refrigerator Compressor (type R12)

09/27/2009 3:51 PM

I have 5 questions regarding this topic:

1- Is the lubricant finded in old refrigerator compressor (the one that use the R-12 type coolant (CFC)) is made of 100% mineral base oil ?

2- Wich class of mineral oil this type of lubricant is made with ? parrafinic, naphtenic or aromatic ?

3- What is the difference between mineral oil and white mineral oil ?

4- Is it possible to obtain a valuable new mineral oil base stock by filtration or distillation of this type of fluid lubricant ? If yes, what would be the possible applications ?

5- What is the value of bulk base stock mineral oil (no formulation) these days (septembre 2009) ?

Thak you !

In refrigeration system oil mist perform certain functions other than minimizing friction. For hermetic units it must have high dielectric strength. It must have adequate fluidity at low temperatures so that it may easily return to the compressor from the evaporator. Oils of mineral origin contain paraffins, napthenes, aromatics and non hydrocarbons. Synthetic oils such as alkyl benzenes and phosphate esters have desirable properties to use with R22 and R 502. Modified Polyalkylene glycols (PAG) are used with R 134. We should choose oil with lowest viscosity which will give necessary sealing properties with the refrigerants used. You have to understand the thermo dynamic and thermo physical properties of refrigerant to choose correct lubricant.

Hi Mrs Wamy,

What would be the best other utilisation of this kind of mineral oil found in old refrigerant system without changing to much the formulation. I thought of using it as an hydraulic oil because it is a non compressible oil. Do you thing it could be used also as a lubricant for wind machine at cold temperature ?

Thank you

This is the company I acquire my mineral from. I'm sure they can help you with knowledge on price of bulk mineral oil. http://www.steoil.com/
