Aluminium Strip Casting Using Twin Rollers?

12/26/2006 10:24 PM

Do you think is it possible to manufacture aluminium strips using twin rollers, which rotate in opposite direction with required gap in between?

I am in full agreement with aurizon.

If only most of the questioners did a diligent search ..... even if they couldn't answer them before coming here, at the minimum their research would at least allow them to phrase their questions better and/or give enough relevant information to warrant a decent attempt to realistically help them.

I have seen a plant and that os how they are done, in multiple sets of twin rollers.

If your target is to cast and solidify molten aluminum in a twin roll gap, this can be done and has been dooing for decades. In this configuration rolls are aligned vertical or 15 degrees tilted from vertical and each rool is arranged to be driven in reverse direction of the other(one in CW , the other in CCW).If you are asking possibility of casting when both are rotating in same direction (CW or CCW), depending on the conditions and configuration that may not function properly. A molten metal flow through nozzle, a roll cooling system and a gap control system (not matured yet) can be provided for successful casting.

If the target is to roll solidified aluminum plates down thinner gauges or to polish surface this can be done by rolls rotating in reverse direction CW and CCW. If you are asking possibility of rolling when rolls are rotating in the same direction (CW or CCW) that has to be studied if it is possible. In this case roll arrengement should be a bit different.

Are you asking about strip casting or rolling (forming)? Either way, the answer is yes.

Aluminum can be hot or cold rolled and has been for many decades. As for strip casting (a mould consisting of counter-rotating, water cooled rolls), this is an old idea. Henry Bessemer of steelmaking fame was the first to propose and demonstrate strip casting of steel in the middle of the 19th century (1858 I think) but it has only recently become practical. Nucor Steel is stripcasting steel to under 2mm thick at their Crawfordsville plant.

I do not know of any aluminum producers doing this, however, as my field leans more to the steel industry, I believe it to be quite likely that it is done with aluminum alloys. I just don't know who or where.

If you would like to know who is doing it, do a US patent search on Al strip casting. It is an incredibly fast and fasinating process. However, it has not been deployed into the market yet, that is coming very soon.
