Can a mag meter work without being grounded?

That depends on what a "mag meter" is.

Can you please provide more information along with the devices full name.

Alternatively look in the product's manual or on the suppliers website for data sheets and application notes.

In a prior post you say you are, " a electrical engineer on the process and control side", among other things.

I'd think a flow meter would not be foreign to you.

Hi there,

The short answer - No, not properly and if you don't ground it you might damage it.

A good grounding is absolutely essential to isolate noise and common mode potential.

If the pipe is conductive and makes contact with the liquid, the flow meter should be grounded to the pipe.

If the pipe is made from non-conductive material, the ground rings should be installed to maintain contact with the process liquid.

Improper grounding results in excessive common mode voltages that can severely limit the accuracy and damage the electronics.

Regards,

Craig

The term <...grounded...> can mean two things:

1) Equipotential bonding for the safety of personnel as required by the local electrical code

2) Shielding signals against electromagnetic interference

Does that answer the question?

If your pipelin eis plastic, that the mag meter must be grounded by grounding rings. if your pipeline is metal , tht ayou needn't to equip grounding rings
