Can someone help me with the following paragraph. I need to give calculations on the following, is there an example that i can follow to get me the information that is required.

The structural members for support of the screw conveyor shall be designed such that the ratio of the un-braced length to the least radius of gyration (slenderness ratio) shall not exceed 120 for compression and 240 for tension. Stresses shall not exceed AISC allowable stresses by more than 1/3 when subject to twice the running torque of the drive motor.

This is not a homework cheating site, but I will give you some ideas based on what you have.

This is a screw conveyor right? So you have your geometry and expected load directions, uness you dont know what a screw conveyor mean. So, google for it and take a look.

Then, you know that you have some lenght of the conveyor without support. And you have also the standard that will guide you through the allowable stresses in the supports, that must withstand the weight of the conveyor itself and the reaction torque to the operation. Take a look about the load on the conveyor as well, you did not mention it.

And, of course, go for the books while you do the calculations.

Its a matter of stating the geometry, allowable stresses, constraints, contour conditions.

Since this is a home work. Check out vendors supply catalogs, they have the information you seek, weedhopper.

When I was in college this you had learn how to do. And was very helpful.

But since you joined CR4, I will be happy to give you a push.

Be careful about asking homework questions here. Quite a number of us here are pranksters and might, just might, succumb to temptation and deliberately give you a wrong answer just for a laugh at your expense.

Yep. Professional education also means how to learn not to embrace loose causes. Better learn now than kill someone after you grow up.

Assuming you understand the terms used, the paragraph is only part of the story. First you need to size the support member. The length is likely to be determined by the equipment layout, but having decided length, need to select type of section and size. If you don't know how you need to find out!

Then you can check the criteria in the paragraph. But note criteria could be met (radius of gyration > length/120) but still not capable of carrying the load. Need to check both.

I don't get the last sentence. Unless I'm missing something, the motor torque only generates internal forces, not loads on the conveyor support structure.

Cheers.........Codey
