Look at it...the bit that moves...is it a coil? Or an iron lamination?
The clue is in the name.

Google 'moving Iron meter movement pic' and the google....'Moving coil meter movement pic'
you'll have to click on some of the results and look at them.

Del the Cat (I'm a Cat...the clue...oh, what the heck, you get the idea...)

I'll drink to that mr Del although haven't seen many moving iron meters for many years suppose because moving coils have much lower inertia.

Scale of moving coil meters are linear, where as moving iron are non linear scale meters.also moving coil offers better needle damping than of moving iron.

Not correcting you but linearity of an meter is mostly a design related issue. You can make as easily linear or non-linear applications both ways

one can improve linearity of a moving iron meter too, but can not call it a practically linear meter, on other hand a moving coil meter exhibit enough linearity for all practical purposes, however a badly designed moving coil meter can have gross non-linearity.

Moving iron meters can not be made fully linear because of eccentric nature of the iron leaf provided, and It is not going to offer any deflection if you try to put it in the center of coil, so no choice left, but keep it eccentric and live with nonlinearity.

It is given as a symbol on the meter dial. An MI meter has a symbol such as an inverted U with a horizontal I underneath it. An MC meter has a sort of a SIGMA symbol. (I am sorry I am unable to draw symbols here).

dear friend:

using a sutable batt.and resistor in seri with ur meter if when u change polarity of batt.deflection of meter reverses its moving coil and if not its moving iron.
