Correct Casting Detail Drawing

10/08/2009 8:00 AM

I am now tasked with creating a casting 3D model and detail drawing for several parts that will me sent out to vendors for quotes and production. These castings will normally be sent to another shop for finished machining which I already have that drawing. These are steel casting, one material callout is ASTM A148 GR. 90-60. I have created the 3d model with draft angles applied to where I think will be needed for the process. I have never seen a casting drawing but I know a little about some of the methods of casting. My question is how to correctly place useful dimensions on the drawing. For example, a center hole that is 340mm at the bottom tapering inward with two degree draft. I have placed 3mm radius on all of the edges. Does one draw phantom like lines to the theoretically sharp point or what? What additional notes should be added that will be useful to the casting shop as well as our QC department when we get casting delivered and inspected? One of the castings will have water pumped through it at about 6 bar and oil in seperate chambers. I have tried to find examples and information without much success. A good example of a detailed drawing from someone experienced in the field would be wonderful and never shared. I'll shred it if you want.

Go and talk to (and spend time with) the people who actually do the job, making up the mold tools and actually doing the casting.
This is almost universal advice.
Take doughnuts, or the local equivalent, and be very humble...you will learn plenty, people are generally only too keen to talk about theirs skills if you show a genuine interest.
Heck it's a day out from the office too.

Good answer. I did the same several years ago, and I found out more about mold design in one day than I did in several weeks of researching the processes.

Yes. Good advise Del (and a well earned 200 GA's, lets hope this one sticks), You would be amazed at how much, and how accurate the information you'll receive will be. They know exactly what they want to see on the drawing, so who better then ask than them directly, instead of guessing, and crossing the fingers.

Hi Del,

Congrats for achieving 200 GAs. Are you going to donate $200 to CR4 like you donated $100 when you got 100 GAs?.

I agree! Absolutely the best answer! There is nothing like a face to face with the folks who will be doing the fabrication (that goes for any part, casting, or machining)! Even if you got a sample drawing from someone, it is the supplier who is making it that counts most for providing proper documentation to avoid surprises at delivery. In fact, if you have documentation that was good for one vendor, make sure you run it by any new vendor you may want to use. These things can vary greatly depending on shop capabilities. And yes, be humble, be very humble.

GA from Del and PopcornWizard.

I'd just add go to the vendor you're least likely to end up using first. That way you make a better impression with the guys you are likely to use.

Kudos to the OP for a well asked question.

And Rotag, you may also want to take that machining drawing with you (assuming it is not proprietary). They may have some advice that would impact that drawing. By knowing what you want as a final product, they can advise you on the design of the casting, not just the detailing.
