Hot Water Requirements

10/08/2009 4:42 PM

i want to put electrical water heater for a labour camp bathrooms,i want to know how much hot water required/person to take bath in a labour camp, we have 16 rooms and each room has ten labours therefore total 160 labours occupied and for them 11 showers are provided for them.

i want to know how much capacity of water heater(litres of hot water /sec or kilowatt) is required ,is there any standards mention in plumbing design guide BS or on what bases we have to consider this much "X" quantity of hot water is required per person or per second or this much "X" quantiy of hot water storage is required.

if any insufficient information there please let me know.

Can you give us a little more?

In USA, for Americans who are accustomed to 20 gallon showers? In USA, for Americans accustomed to a "Navy Shower" with about 4 gallons? Other parts of the world, other hygiene habits?

Shift work? Will everyone want to shower at 6:00 PM, after work? Men shaving? Women shaving?

A little more info will get you much better answers.

thanks for u r reply, this labour city is going to build in uae and the temp of inlet water shall be 15 0r 20 to 25 degc and hot water temp should supply at 60 degc therefore delta-t is around 35 deg c.

i think they are going to take bath 2 times a day, they start the work at 6:00am in the moring and finish the work in the evening 5 or 6 pm as they will do overtime.for this reason sure they will take to times bath, washing whatever.

Ballpark estimate 1600 gallons and minimum four tank-less electric water heaters 220V about 80Amps each

Google for Plumbing standard, UAE should have plumbing standards

Double the estimated quantity of water, the actual volume maybe ± 400 gallons depending upon your intentions.

A tank-less water heater capacity can be metered from the time water begins to move through the heater until flow ceases, the heating elements are actuated by the flow of water. The water heater design capacity is dependant upon which model is used.

Think solar. It will be a crime to use electricity to heat water in UAE! May be you can have an electric heater only as a supplementary for rainy days.

Some water heater manufacturers offer web based or free software for selection of water heater sizing.

Depending on project life expectancy, solar pre-heating may be a viable solution to control project life energy cost compared to more expensive initial equipment cost.

Hot water Demand Calculation

From BS EN 15316-3-1:2007, Table 1:

For sports establishments: 101 litres/unit/day (unit = number of showers installed)

You don't want consider a labour camp any less than a sport establishment..do you..?

Units=11

101 x 11 = 1111 Litres/ Day

Again there is one more way of calculating the demand ie 3.8 Litres per person per day

3.8 x 160 =608 Litres/ Day

Hope this will help you Mr Naushad...
