A WPS is a guideline to ensure joint integrity as proven by PQR + applicable mech tests + NDT. It is intended for all job sizes once the welding technique used proves itself in these tests. The sizes etc come in to picture by qualifying welder on test coupons of a given size as per your job requirements. ASME IX stipulates weld metal deposit and not job size. Please ref to QW 450 - 461.

Per ASME Code, Section IX, QW-451 Procedure Qualification Thickness Limits and Test Specimens, and from both QW-451.1 & QW-451.2, your WPS with test coupon thickness 15 mm can cover up to 30 mm including the targeted thickness 20 mm.

Note. A lot of WPS's & PQR's were done which we used a test sample coupon with thickness t = 14 mm to cover an actual job with 2 t = 28 mm, where we used the both welding procedures SAW & SMAW.

See the attached WPS & PQR for a test coupon 14 mm thickness, used to qualify a welding job for fabrication of a pressure vessel, material ASTM A516 Grade 70 with thickness 28 mm: WPS's &_PQR's.

Dear friend,

Please refer ASME Section IX, Article 4,QW-450,451 Specimen and it's sub clauses. The base metal thickness range on the WPS would be 2*coupon thickness.

With best regards,

Anil

Please verify for thickness range in ASME Sec IX. QW451.1.

As i know once if any one(ex.2"or 6" or etc) diameter qualified, the qualification range will be applicable for all diameter.

Please let me know if any query.

Both the thickness and diameter limits are in Section IX of the ASME Code. See QW-451.2 table for thickness and QW-452.3 and 452.4 for diameters. Thickness for weld metal is found in QW-452.1(a) and QW-452.1(b). These are tables. Additional information is contained in QW-300, 301, 302, etc.
