Gym under helideck

10/09/2009 6:17 AM

I am a marine Surveyor residing in Nigeria , some Mobile offshore Drilling Unit ( Offshore Drilling Rigs) were design without in -house provision for gym facility, however with current demand and awareness, rig owners are making provision for this facility under the helideck. I want to know whether it is safe for this facility to be located under the helideck.

Refer to the original designers of the structure for the proposal to be formally assessed.

Many if not most helidecks are mounted on or very near the living quarters to facilitate getting people off the chopper and into the ready room and then on to their quarters.

I don't see a great issue with having the gym under the helideck, but I guess I need to know exactly where you are talking about. Are you talking about building a room whose roof is the helideck? That might be a safety concern in the event of a helicopter accident.

It is an open area with no roof

Should be ok, just clear the area during helicopter landing and take off.

Do not block the area under the helideck. The wind must flow without any obstructions.

You must create an undisturb airflow otherwise you create strange winds next to and on the helideck. This is not what you want as a pilot. (I'm not)
