Paint Can Rotation System

12/29/2006 4:11 AM

I want to design a system to rotate the filled paint can with requisite level of automation. The system is required by the paint manufacturing plant wherein cans of various diameters and weights are filled on a filler. They want to perform non contact ink jet coding on each of the filled can. For this purpose they want to rotate the can one at a time with expected throughput of 40 cans per minute. Can anyone help me buildup the concept for design please?

Many thanks and best regards

Hello Mr. Bipin

The solution to your problem could easily be an what is called an indexing mechanism.

This basically is to put your work job under a work head for a defiinte period of time during which the operation of writing ( or anything for that matter can be carried out)

You can look at some of the most commonly used indexing mechanisms like Geneva mechanism, Rotating cam, Ratchet and pinion, etc

Here you can adjust the time during which your operation has to happen and accordingly select the specifications of the mechanism.

All these mechanisms being common you might find their mechanism pretty easily on the internet.

Hope this is of some use to you

You can do so by bring the Can to be printed ,over a fixed loaction,by means of Cams,Indexing,Linear feediing, etc,Once the can reaches, Printing location,it can be rotated by a moing rotary disc ,connected to geared motor,Pneumatic Cylinder will move the disc up ,when component reacges over it,it will be sensed by sensor etc.

Incorporate the idea of ROLLING the area of the can past the ink jets instead of rotating them individually. This should accommodate various sizes of cans.

You might want to consider moving the print head(s) around the cans.

Alternately perhaps you could print them during filling or before.

What I saying here is that at this stage of your project step back and consider the whole process with a fresh perspective and if you can come up with a better way of accomplishing the goal than spinning the can after it is filled "they" will usually buy into it.
