HOW TO SAVE ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION AND METER READING

10/10/2009 11:13 AM

I AM FROM INDIA.WE HAVE SINGLE PHASE AND THREE PHASE ELECTRIC SUPPLY.USUALLY IN DOMESTIC HOME SUPPLY IF THE LOAD IS BELOW 3 KW,THEN SINGLE PHASE 22OVOLT SUPPLY IS MADE AVAILABLE AND FOR REST 440V 3 PHASE BOTH IN HOME AND BUSINESS,INDUSTRIAL PURPOSES.

MY QUESTION IS WHAT INSTRUMENTS OR ARRANGEMENTS IF ANY CAN BE INSTALLED ON OUR MAIN SUPPLY WHICH CAN REDUCE METER READING CONSUMPTION ASSUMING IF THE INSIDE CONNECTING LOAD IS AROUND 1KW OR 2 KW.MOSTLY ELECTRONIC METERS ARE INSTALLED AND AT MANY PLACES ELECTROMEGNETIC TYPE METERS ARE INSTALLED.

PLEASE SEND YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ME ON MY MAIL ALSO AND OBLIGE

Any device used to defraud the supplying entity would be illegal, here in the USA.

Just pay the bill and be happy you have electricity.

Answering your TITLE, not your text:

That's easy! Turn off things when not using them, and choose low energy consumption devices.

Answering your TEXT:

There is no such device; it makes no difference whether it is single or three phase, nor what voltage. If you want to pay for less energy, USE less energy!

By the way, please notice that CAPITAL letters should be used for emphasis ONLY. All caps here is considered shouting, which is not polite!

Thanks!

Meters are supposed to give accurate reading. In case of any doubts regarding the particular meter, you should get it re-calibrated through the official route.

Now, regarding energy conservation tips :

1. Home cooling : Air conditioners are needed for high-humid coastal areas. But generally, air coolers ( using water ) are enough for low-humid interior areas. Air coolers are not only cheaper, but they also use less electricity.

2. Electronic speed regulators for fans avoid wastage of electricity at the regulators ( when you use fans at lower speeds ).

3. In case your area has a high voltage problem, the same has to be sorted out with the authorities. This will not only save electrical equipments from damage, but also reduce your electric bills.

Hope the above tips are useful.

Regards,

Rajan

I am not trying to adopt illegal things nor would like others to use it. But the fact is that there are some companies in India advertising some Gedgets which are installed near the main Panel Board of House and claim 30-50% Electricity consumption reduction.I will be quoting the name of the company who is trying to claim this.

I therefore wanted to know the technique adopted to reduce the consumtion by installations of any equipment as in the same where I live I get charge for 600 units consumption while with the same utility items being used by my neighour ,the bill unit is even less then 100 units. It seems that he has installed some Capicitor based Electronic Instruments which controls the units .I tried to ask about this from the neighour but he says nothing.

My message is to find out more about this in deep.

If you follow the link i sent you, you will see that the company is selling a legitimate item of electrical equipment designed to reduce your power consumption by improving your power factor and stabilizing the voltage. Nothing illegal about that, major consumers worldwide employ this method of saving costs. It sounds to me that your neighbour has one of these units. I can only suggest that you google "power saving devices" and see what it gives you. Having read all the replies to you original request, I think you've been given the best advice available, so it's up to you to take or leave it. There is no "Right Answer", remember no-one has told you to do anything illegal, it has been suggested that you investigate power factor correction devices, but at the end of the day how and what you are charged for is really dependent on your usage, the more you use the more you pay. Good luck

I think that you are talking about domestic supply. It is rare that power factor is a major issue in domestic consumption. Please check for hidden leaks. If possible switch off all connected load by switching off each load and check that the meter is not running.

It is very unlikely that your consumption is six times your neighbour's for the same load.

As far as power factor correction in a domestic situation is concerned, you may not get better than 5% improvement overall. It may help if you balance the load across all the phases.

My Daddy once told me about the idea of drilling a very small hole in the side of the meter glass, out of sight, and hooking the rotating wheel with a fine wire with a small hook bent into the end. That's my pop! RIP.

Current diversion or theft of electric service is not a laughing matter. All other customers must pay for the electricity consumed illegally.

Drilling holes in electric billing meters can land you in jail or dead.

Yes it is Sunday, but the Ravens lost again

Quote "like our friend from the States says...trying to fix the meter so it does not work is illegal in the Western world and I guess it's the same in India. Try this link if you want to SAVE money, not swindle the supply company out of money...and get yourself into trouble. http://plugandsave.com/slash-your-electricity-bill-now-guaranteed.html "

This item is sold all over the world and is a rip off. Unless your utility is charging you a power factor penalty, this will not save you any money. Check and see if there is a PF penalty. Most all utilities charge residential customers for KWH's. Improving the PF does not effect KWH's you use. Don't waste your money.

Quote "My Daddy once told me about the idea of drilling a very small hole in the side of the meter glass, out of sight, and hooking the rotating wheel with a fine wire with a small hook bent into the end. That's my pop! RIP."

Thats a good way to land in jail.

Wareagle many thanks for those comments, I've not used that unit, I only know about it and passed it on as information only. It seems that our Indian friend might be out of luck in trying to save money. Only other way is to buy a generator and steal the gas for it (joking)

Oh my friend brich!

No way. Here in India, they charge even if you have generator because you are trying to escape from their monopoly

Besides fuel costs are so high that electricity from cheating company is cheaper due to subsidy

Plug and Save reduce amps and kilowatt hours. Howw can that NOT save you money? If you're at home you'll be billed for one of these two and therefore you must save money.

Their site also states their products are legal.

Tropical

I used to work for a utility and your method was one we found on more that one occasion. There were numerous others. Some were very ingenious. I always wondered why these smart people could not get a job.

Or try living without electricity.

I am not kidding. Here in my city we have one old lady, who is Ph.D. in Botany, retired professor and well recognized / respected expert in botany, who has never used electricty in her home

May be your neighbour has all the utilities same but:

May be those are more energy efficient, star marked instruments.

Neighbour may be switching off his utilities, when not in use... like switching off the lamps when no body is in the room, operating TV only during interesting programs, using washing machine only once in a week, instead of using every day... saving power many ways (which I do).

Just having same equipment does not assure you same power consumption.

Be vigilant about your own use of electricity, you will reduce to Rs. 100.

As bioramani says, power factor is not a great factor for domestic utilities.
