Line Reactor for VFD

10/10/2009 4:43 PM

Why & when reactors are required at input and/or output of VFD ?

What is basic function of the reactor in case of VFDs ?

How to select the reactor size?

If considering supply side harmonics, consider the DC Link choke option as this is smaller, lower cost and better at attenuating harmonics. The input choke has the disdvantage of presenting a voltage drop before the VFD but the advantage of offering better protection against incoming voltage transients.

The output choke also has the benefit of reducing current peaks which can avoid the VFD nuisance tripping on 'overcurrent' due to higher capacitance on longer cable runs in armoured cable.
