Depends entirely on the design of the seal . . . if the seal requires leak off, which is required to lubricate the seal. . . then leak off can be supplied from an external source, such as the pump discharge. If the seal has a cooling cavity that must be supplied with cooling water then water must come from a source of sufficient quantity and pressure to meet the needs. In some cases, small applications such as single stage pumps, no leak off or cooling water is required and no damage to seal will occur, because it is designed to operate without cooling or leak off for lubrication. Some seals are designed to operate at low temperatures and others at high temperatures, so design of seal is the determining factor whether leak off is needed or not.
