Single-Phase to Three-Phase

10/14/2009 10:53 AM

i recently purchased a machine with a 220v single phase motor. the only hookup i have are 220v three phase. iwhen i hook in the motor makes a high pitch whining noise. what is causing this? I tried switching the lead and it doesn't make a difference.

Assuming you only hooked up 2 of the 3 phases, right?

If so, it should be fine, no reason why that would make the motor whine. Are you sure it isn't a VFD driven motor? Some types have the VFD built right on to the motor now.

Can you clarify about your voltage? Is it 220/380V 3-phase? (Just measure if phase to phase voltage is about 380V) If yes you should connect to one phase and neutral.

Oooh, good point. I was thinking of the 240V Delta that is here in the US. If it is 220Y380V in another country, the phase-to-phase voltage would be 380 and over exciting a motor that much can definitely make it whine.

Wow, some kinda answers! All you have to do is connect the motor to two phases of your source, hell your refrigerator doesn't care if you have single phase or three phase to your house as long as you have the proper voltage for it! Back to your whining noise, that has nothing to do with the motor connections assuming you have the coils connected in parallel. Most small motors are afford voltages at 220 or 115.

(actually 120/240v) The proper connections are shown on the motor nameplate for voltage you want to apply.

You have a narrow view of the world sir. Not everyone who posts here is in the US and Canada. In other countries, the power distribution system, even to residential users, is very different.

Hello Guest.

What is the rated frequency of the motor, and the frequency of your net?
