HVAC - VRV Systems

10/15/2009 5:17 AM

How does the VRV system work?

Why does the outdoor unit for a VRV shut down due to a problem with one of the indoor units? case in question An outdoor supporting 8 indoor units shuts down due a fault with one indoor unit.

VRV systems use single outdoor unit connected to multiple indoor units hence having ability to provide air conditioning more efficiently. One of a number of informative links included below http://www.vrf-air-conditioning.co.uk/daikin-air-conditioning-uk.htm I do not know enough about VRV systems to answer original question but suspect that in order to get meaningful answer it may be worth stating type of equipment and where used. It sounds like a control set-up issue. Regards WR

VRV means Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRV) Systems . Its advantages are it needs less space, easy to fit in existing buildings, can use common refrigerant piping. These type of systems are able to provide total versatility and each indoor unit may cool independently of each other. It is available in the market since less than a decade. It is expensive than the conventional split unit.

In addition to WR's good link, http://www.daikinac.com/commercial/documents/VRV_PCVUSE06-04C.pdf has more detail. And I agree, it's probably a control issue.

Each indoor unit tells the master control what flow it needs, and whether it is for heating or cooling (heat pump models). If one indoor unit is demanding too much (such that total demand >130% of outdoor unit capacity), it may trigger a fault in the master control.

Another possibility is that the indoor unit fault is screwing up communications. If your installation is using the 2-wire control network, the indoor unit could be causing a communication failure. If the master contol can't talk to the units, that would probably trigger a general shutdown.
