If you are an electrical engineer we do not need to answer this question. It is basic electrical engineering. In case you are not an electrical engineer please hire one for carrying out this work for you.

How to calculate the value of Capacitor required to improve Power factor?

10/20/2009 12:25 PM

Re: How to calculate the value of Capacitor required to improve Power factor?

Capacitor's Capacitance is measured in KVAr.

KVAr = KW X (tan (Phi1) - tan (Phi2))

Where

KW = load measured in KW = 100 KW

Cos(Phi1) = Initial Power Factor = 0.8

Cos(Phi2) = Final Power Factor required = 0.99

KVAr required = 100 X ( 0.75 - 0.143) = 60.7 KVAr Answer.

You have to see trigonometric tables to calculate Tan from Cos

You can use Excels sheet to calculate the answer.

I really hate that. I was hoping that you would explain what the question was?

Hi vikram,

Don't get frightened . Please study the subject throughly before putting up a thread in this forum. Your thread is so vague that no one can give a simple reply. So do not run away but clarify further about your question what actually you want to know from us or what explanation you require from us on the subject. From what you said here what we understand is that you are talking about a PF correction panel .For that you must know the KVA capacity of the electrical system for which you want to correct the PF. The present PF of the load, type of capacitor switching ( automatic or manual) , the required level of PF you need to maintain, type of load, etc. So come back with details

The best method is to wait until the panel is energised and measure/record using a digital power analyser parameters like V,I,W,VA,VAr,pf,harmonics,Hz and give to a manufacturer of capacitor bank to recommend size and give quotation to supply,install,test and commission it. Assessing before energisation is approximate and some consultants give a rating based on their experience.
