Stevem has the definition for Vector control.

Motion control in my experience has been a catch all marketing verbiage for speed / position / torque controlled applications usually incorporating a PLC for reference and or feedback control. The drives can be vector, Sensorless vector, brushless dc, brushed dc, etc., usually tailored for machine tool or robotic type applications.

Now where was that Utube Rockwell ad?

I believe "motion control" means positioning. Vector control is speed control which in the old days required tach feedback. We have some newer ABB ACS800 drives which seem to work better in vector control without tach. ABB calls the new control DTC (direct torque control)

Nice product. I have found ABB reasonably good to work with.

I also like their DCS800 package.

I don't favour the ABB 20 year older packages.

Rockwell ControlLogix platform I like for the PLC. Their AC drives seem a little buggy.

Too bad the Reliance Automax line is gone.
