Books, Artcles and Thesis About Propeller Marine Shafting Alignment

10/21/2009 5:55 AM

HI, My name is Giuseppe. I am in the first few yrs of my Naval Architect and Marine Engineer with the Italian University.Unfortunately recent published books are very difficult to come by.

I am getting ready to prepare my thesis in subject of Shafting Alignment, i have very limited resources of material offered by my Professor which dated back to 1960-1970. I have to talk about the alignment procedures, how to determine the bearings position and the reactions that they gives. Than I have to propose a numerical example with a software. Could you suggest me some books and software?? Here's my mail: giusep.dv@gmail.com

Sincerely

Hi Giuseppe,

A.:

you can get any technical book that is published from the library of "Technische Universitaet Hannover" in Germany. They are obliged to collect all technical information that can be bought. Search for TUB Hannover.

As flights from Italy to Germany are no longer expensive you may go personally and copy what you need.

(I paid for a flight Frankfurt-Pescara both ways 80€).

There is also a network of exchange between libraries, ask at your local University.

B.: Think about general necessities of alignment and consequences of misalignment,

this is a much wider field than you may expect. But the principle is always the same: misalignment is resulting in high load and wear.

I konw little on this specific subject but would like to toss this out for discussion...Yesterday I attended a townhall meeting at the annual CMTS/SME trade show (Canadian Manufacturing Trade Show with SME the major sponsor) and in the question period i asked why a country like Canada can dole out billions of $$ like Candy and yet ignore its shipbuilding industry...A quick cursory search of the web was enlightening...It seems our political will and likely the arrogance of the shipyard owners has a lot to do with the decline of this potential huge industry not only in Canada but throughout the world leaving all of us to the whims of foreign ship yards...I know money rules the day but commonsense would say keep as much work in the country as possible....

Dear Giuseppe,

One of the things you must bear in mind is that whilst it is very important for you to acquire the : theorethical knowledge at the Universtity where you are studying, and of course prepare your thesis, you need to balance such information with was is crucial when the time will come later at a commercial/practical level. My suggestion is that this can help you not only in your thesis but later in practical life.

To achieve this one of the best way you can absorb what will be the :rules , specifications etc that will be expected from you in practical terms is to : approach the Certification Society in Europe and study their requirements. I refer here to :

-Bureau Veritas,

-Lloyds of London

-Germanische Lloyd

(There is an Italian One whose name now escapes me but a call to the larger Italian Shipyards can assist you.)

You need to know that all Asian shipyards ( and I have worked in : Japan,Korea,China) who work for Foreign Owners - or repair the latter' s ships- are used to complying to these standards. Therefore from a practical stand point you need to be familar with these , and this in turn may help you with your thesis, whilst being , I undestand , readily available via the : internet.

Best of Luck,

Labor Omnia Vincit

NB The vast majority of work in : shipyards (besides cleaning the large vessels hulls ) is to : withdraw the propeller(s) and shafts , refit stern and other bearing and re-line shafts. This is where the controlling organisations named above and their respective : standards , criteria , specifications , play a very important role.
