Induction Motors and End Rings

In modern induction motors, the most common type of rotor has cast-aluminum conductors and short-circuiting end rings. The rotor turns when the moving magnetic field induces a current in the shorted conductors.

can anyone provide one basic explanation of "short-circuiting "?

Well, I believe you will find lots of books over this. This is the fundamental principle of operation of a squirrel cage induction motor. There is nothing new here.

Just a bit of correction (to J451)

This gentleman - let me guess - is a maintenance man. 1985 shows he is just out of college- he is finding things not probably from homework, most likely from either Erection or maintenance manuals of equipments (terminologies like assembly bullets, the valve terminologies, the gland steam leakage- are all the terms used in these manuals, guides or brochures)

Hence we can humor him.

What you are looking at is a typical SQIM (Squirrel cage Induction Motor) And exactly those ened shortings give it the shape and hence the name of the confinement of Kris.

Google it and you will find it even better go through any textbook on Electrical Motors and you will get the idea (We old people still prefer papyrus)

i am an ordinary translator. Yes,you are right,i am just out of college and have not much experience the terminologies used in ,let's say, motors ,pumps, and other rotary euqipment. BUt with the aid of Mr.Google, i have more access to find what i need in my work. However, there are still too many things that i fail to understand. so asking others remains the only option. Stiil, i thank everybody that i have come across and given me undiluted help. THanks.

Don't worry, there will be barbs, and helps too (may not be spoonfed). We prefer to give a round-about hint, and then as you follow the hints, you will learn yourself, and the struggle will stick the things on your mind.

Touchy lot aren't they? The short circuiting end rings just means that the ends of all the conductors are electrically tied together. That is all the ends of the conductors are all tied together on each end. It looks a bit like the wheel that hamsters run on down in the pet shop. Back in the day some people kept squirrels as pets and they ran in similar wheels, hence the name.
