Some possible methods:

1. A brake motor for the drive. (Power on releases the brake; power off applies it.)

2. Air dampers (louvers) in the inlet air stream, with a motor to open or close.

3. Some other shaft brake.

4. A movable shoe that impinges on the fan impeller to stop it from turning.

Of these, I suspect [1] is the best, and [4] the oddest.

tornado; you could have a control that puts DC voltage on 1 phase winding of the motor when it is off line. perry

Thanks! I was wondering about electrical means to do it, but I didn't know of this technique. What are the calculations involved, to get sufficient holding force without overheating the motor?
