Process for Making Clear Boxes (Die Cutting?)

10/22/2009 8:02 PM

Hi all

I need information about the process for making the clear boxes (Not the clamshells). those cubes that have tabs and are later formed manually. One of the flaps have adhesive (I believe it is UV glue).

How do you make these and if you have any internet info and vendors would be great.

Hi Manufacturing Jedi,

We need more information:

  • Size of the "boxes"
  • Material of the "boxes"
  • Thickness of the walls of the "boxes"
  • Orientation of the "flaps"

Come to think of it, it would be far, far better if you could provide a drawing. "A picture paints a thousand words" (or more)

Mike

Just like this one. We want to cut costs on this kind of packaging by making it inhouse . It seems that this is the direction packaging is taking eventhough its much more expensive. Does anyone know how to make them and what equipment to use? I believe the material is RPET but I am not sure.

A lot depends on your volume. This type of box is usually done by die cut specialists and they have fast automatic die cutters, and they keep them busy as they cost a lot. They also buy the plastic in huge volume.

As for glue, often these boxes use trapped tabs that maintain their position by interlocking after insertion to prevent easy unlatching.

You may find your cost of doing it inhouse is excessive.

What I suggest is find a few makers and get quotes. You would buy these in boxes packed flat, so you could source them in China, if you can tolerate the shipping delay. Air may be costly.

Most major cities have die cutting companies.

Hi MJ,

Depends on the design of the box and quantity as to the method used.

If it is small then maybe hand or machine cut-n-crease with hand gluing.

If it is just say 2000, and they are 'one-up', that is one per sheet, cut-n-creasing by hand would work.

If it is much much than that they an automated cut-n-crease machine can be quicker.

The boxes can also be glued by hand for a small quantity.

Or, be glued by feeding them through a gluing machine.

You make all the same decisions with acetate boxes, as you would with plain or printed cardboard.
