wheat silos lightning protection

10/24/2009 1:15 PM

Dear sirs we have 12 wheat silos of 10000 tons capacity and it formed of galvanized corrugated steel panel of dia 2mm from top and 6mm on the bottom, my question is can I use the body as striking termination device when making LPS. On the hand can I use the steel frame towers between silos which is more than 6mm over all thickness. Also if possible mention which standard to follow in your reply.. Regards Eng. Omar

Hello omar.a,

Thank you for getting back to me.

You say the HSA owns these silos? Is that a Bank?

What are you actually asking, is it your job to make these structures 'safe'?

Can you tell me if they have owned them for long and why they apparently do not have any lightening conductor and or fire suppressants?

Take care.

Hello omar.a,

I thank you for your gracious post.

I wish you luck with your career and hope you did not take any insult from my previous posts.

I think you may find any lightening conductors fitted as the silos were built, perhaps? They are not the easiest structure to work on after all.

However, to the job in hand and your request. It seems your instruction on lightening conductor fitting leave a lot to be desired. Why else would you be asking such details only a month or two after you went on this course?

OK, lets assume you know the hands on, practical stuff of how to. But my suggestion would be to ask your local Farming Association or perhaps read the details I sent in my second post with the instructions on how to install conductors on a Farm. You can always start the job you have to do and if you get stuck write in again to this thread for more conformation of a particular detail perhaps?

Can I also say this site has many contributing Members on week days than do not always visit here at weekends. Please take a while over the next couple of days to see if any other Member posts. They are sure to do so.

Take care and good luck.
