Data Theft 2005

06/20/2005 3:15 PM

The Baltimore Sun has published a timeline called "Personal Data Breaches in 2005". Just want the latest news? The head of the credit card company whose computer system was breached by hackers has acknowledged that his firm should not have been keeping the consumer records in the first place. Let's hope that the second half of 2005 is less eventful when it comes to the theft of consumer data.

Passing the Buck

The real question is how much are consumers rates going to go up to pay for all the new security measures and to defray the costs of all this fraud going on?

I like the approach that California has taken. Residents of the Golden State can put a "security freeze" on their credit files. Most businesses will not extend credit without first checking a consumer's credit history.

It's not about extending credit. These thefts are for credit that has already been issued.
