MBAs are not a requirement for working with any instrumentation.

Neither is a B.Tech in Instrumentation Engineering.

Project management would be helpful way to better integrate your existing skill set with the way the "suits" operate.

The latest "flavor" of MBA thinking is called design thinking http://design.case.edu/what/

http://worldbenefit.case.edu/global-forum/file/Beckman/Beckman%20Joyce.pdf

http://www.slideshare.net/whatidiscover/design-thinking-101

I completed my MBA and believe that you will benefit from having a better grasp of the way the "suits" think in terms of business as a "dollars flowing process" as opposed to our engineering "materials process energy product" flow thinking. And you'll gain their magic vocabulary, which means you can successfully display your critical thinking using their terms and really get things going/ maybe even make a difference.

Perhaps the ultimate question for all of us as engineers is given in one of the above links: Now that we have the technology to do anything, what should we do and how should we do it? This begs the question of appropriate design, as well as traditional business costing/ financial measures.

If you want to do project management get the MBA but remember that the people who know the technology will always be able to put on over on you.

If you want to understand what's really going on better get an engineering degree first.

"They" are finding the traditional MBA does not offer enough technological focus to make it a good choice to manage the technical process.

If you want to manage technology, the Masters of Science, Management of Technology (MS MOT) degree is your best choice. A number of schools (including those like MIT, Stanford, and Polytech-NYU) offer them in both traditional and executive formats.

Good luck.

I'm a I&C Engineer and MBA myself, and my take on this is that you should NOT get an MBA unless you intend to go into a non-technical branch of engineering.

If you're thinking of going into engineering sales or marketing, or into something for which an overall understanding of finances, etc., work, and MBA will help you get an overall view of how stuff works. It'll be sort of like when you graduated from engineering ... you'll know stuff, but not how to do anything well.

If you're thinking of staying in 'technical' engineering (that is, working as part of engineering project teams, in whatever position), you'd waste your time getting an MBA. And worse ... it's DEMANDING, so you'd suffer for nothing.

Good luck!
