Best Material for Steel Stake

01/05/2007 7:55 AM

I need to produce 5-10,000 steel stakes per month, all I have to go by is an old rusty sample. The customer does not care what the material type is, only that it has the same Rockwell hardness, around 50-55. The part is 3/16" thick X 4" long and tapers from 1/2" to 1/8". I will be stamping them in a small blanking die from hand fed strips. My question is: What is the cheapest combination of material and heat treat processing that will easily reach 50-55 rockwell with minimum warpage? I am thinking 1050, any other suggestions?

I have it on good authority (Blade, The Last Man on Earth, etc) that metal works just as well.

With the high price of steel and limited availability these days I would get with a supplier(s) (Alro is a good one) and have there sales guy come up with a couple of solutions. Steel price quotes are only good for a couple of days now because of the market and you may want to be able to switch to different choices as needed.

I use Alro often, I quoted the job using 1050 but will I need to buy over 2,000 #'s at a time to get the cost down to $ .75 per pound. Then the heat treat is around $.40 per pound. I heard that I may be able to find a heat treat source that is set up to carburize while tumbling for around $.25 per pound, then I may be able to use mild steel for $.35-$.40 per pound and carburize them .020" deep for a total of $.60- $.65 for material and heat treat per pound combined. I currently have a total of $1.30 per pound because I am only buying enough material to make 5,000 pieces at a time. This is only 800 pounds, I get some discount if I buy over 2,000 pounds but not like the savings of carburizing steel $.40 / # mild steel at $.25 per pound. If this method will work, I will be able to cut the cost in half. Does anyone know of a heat treat source near Detroit that does tumble carburizing on small parts?

Find a manufacturer that regularly carburizes parts (gearbox manufacturers, etc.) nearby and tag along on a carburizing oven run for a few bucks.
