For general "what is a fastener" info try Wikipedia.

ASME has a PIN code system for standard fasteners. You can buy the code from their website.

The "Machinery Handbook" has most all the pertinent information you may need, from all pitch diameters to tensil strength of various materials, as well as certain applications.

Probably the best single source for the kind of information you are looking for is the Industrial Fasteners Institute (IFI). One of their most useful publications is titled, "Fastener Standards". The IFI was founded in 1931 and is an association of U.S. manufacturers of bolts, nuts, screws, washers, rivets, sems and all types of special industrial fasteners.

There is a great book used in the motorsports industry by Carroll Smith: "Nuts, Bolts, Fastener and Plumbing Handbook" - formerly known as "Screw to Win". This is easily digestable by those new to the scene as well as informative.

Specialty fasteners that fulfill a specific design requirement (ie quick release, re-usability, locking) are becoming popular products with the fastener industry. Visit www.phil-lok.com to learn about such a fastener.
