Designing Global, Mobile Devices

06/20/2005 5:30 PM

Aaron Marcus, founder of a UI design firm that bears his name, has designed over 300 user interfaces for Web and mobile companies such as Nokia, Samsung, and Motorola. So how do UI designers succeed in the global marketplace? (http://www.thefeature.com/article?articleid=101703) (Sorry! Link no longer available.) Know your (local) audience. "Societies such as Germany and Japan . . . will continue to demand more buttons, functions and options on their mobile devices," Marcus reports. "However, other cultures, such as the US, will most certainly demand the polar opposite." Why the difference? According to Marcus, it's all about "uncertainty avoidance".
