Photosynthesis Without Sunlight

06/21/2005 10:30 AM

Scientists exploring the black waters around a deep-sea vent have discovered a bacterium that can convert light into energy. This is the first discovery of an organism that uses a source of light, other than the sun, in the process of photosynthesis.

Method

So is there a different process, or is it all just photosynthesis? While it might be interesting, I wonder why this is a big deal. If I found a wolf that only ate fish, some digestive method, it would be interesting, but not to surprising.

It's a big deal because it is indeed interesting and SURPRISING. This particular process has never been seen before and offers up a glimpse into a new style of life on Earth. This is a eureka moment - we learn through viewing the unexpected - and it means so much more than being simply interesting. If life can subsist on Earth generated life, than what else is possible? Could this be a model for extraterrestial life that is more distant from a star than we are - it certainly opens up the possibility.

If someone had asked me yesterday if there could be plant life that photosensitizes something other then sunlight I would have said "more than likely". The same thing for those tube worms they found, the fact that they get their heat from lava flows rather than sunlight doesn't change the fact that life needs heat and light to exist.
As for supporting the argument for alien life, I do agree. It shows that life can exist and flourish even in areas we consider to hostile to sustain life.

Yes, there is also a potential for Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, Elves and Abe Vigoda to exist. If any of these were discovered, it would be a big honkin' deal. What is more central to science than proving that the theoretical is more than theoretical?

Honestly the most important thing is science is measuring things. If it can not be measured it does not exist.
Still I want my Loch Ness monster so I'll go sit in the corner and be good.
