Equipment for Burning Cut Wire Rope

11/04/2009 4:32 PM

Hi all.

I am searching for equipment to burn cut galvanized and stainless wire rope. We have several pieces of older equipment which do this, but need to outfit a new facility. Basically, copper electrodes close around cable and fire voltage across them. The arc burns throught the cable and also melts the new cut ends so they do not just unravel or fray. I've been checking with several of the automated machine makers who use shear blades to cut cable, but they are unable to help me. Anyone know where I can go?

Thanks!

Jake

Watch fumes if you are vaporizing zinc my friend!

This may (or may not) help:

Cinch a metallic cable tie (or a few wraps of wire) around the cable on either side of your cut. Cut through the cable with a thin-blade abrasive cut-off wheel. Heat the ends enough for a low-melting-point solder to penetrate through the cable filaments. Remove the cable ties.

Don't ignore answer #1. Then go on to answer #2 except substitute a tig welder for the solder. The welder will fuse the wires at the very end and keep them from unraveling. Solder or braze has a tendency to flow up the wire rope and stiffen it for a considerable length.

This an advantage of TIG welding the end, traded off against less heating of the zinc when soldering (I think, but don't know for sure). If you heat up only the very end, the solder shouldn't migrate very far. Next time I get a chance to try....

We've had them for years...we just want to get more for a new facility. We got these from a company called Ewald (www.ewaldinstruments.com .... I think), and they've built us a couple of slightly different models. For getting a new one I'm just trying to see what other options are out there, but it looks to me like they are the only show in town!

I've had many occasions when a small portable one of these would have been great... Many of the installations I've been involved with (usually but not always post installation) have miles of wire rope, the building I'm in now has 269,800+ feet of 1/4" 7x19 divided over more than 800 pieces; but bear in mind that while I have a ton of wire in place its use is very low duty cycle and generally the loads rarely exceed 20% of SWL; so we probably won't replace any of the cables for 20+ years unless they get damaged or shock loaded... so we use a lot but are still a tiny insignificant segment of the wire rope market.
