earth resistance value

11/08/2009 3:20 AM

What should be earth resistance value as per IE rule 1956 or 2003. Is it within 10 ohm? Is resistance value depend on type of load or substation?

The minimum value of anything is either zero or minus infinity.

For earthing requirements please refer to IS 3043 for installations in India.

No standard on the globe, mandates a certain maximum permissible value for system earth resistance. Definitely NOT in any of the 143 IE Rules. Wherever the IE Rules mention about the value of earth resistance, it just vaguely says that the earth resistance should be "low enough". But, how much is low enogh? SO is tha case with IS 3043. It also says only "low enough". Even IEEE does not specify a certain maximum permissible earth resitance.

However, there is clause in the Indian National Electric Code, 1985, which says that for equipment earthing the earth resistance should not be more than 5 Ohms.
