hi everyone

i am building some project and basically i want to tag somethings like wallet, pda etc

and be able to determine if a person is carrying those tagged things from a reader by the door as the person passes through the door.

i need a reader which reads in a range of about 1m

i have found so many of them on the net with a cost btn &400-2000 which is too much for my budget.

does any one know of a cheap reader which can read in this range?

or have a better idea of how to do this?

Drill an inconspicuous hole in one of the walls and watch to see who picks up the wallet or PDA and walks out with it.

? What could be simpler or cheaper ?

Maybe not simpler or cheaper ... but if you can't drill a hole thrugh one of the walls , then find some stuff to clutter-up a corner and hide one of these (<link).

Might look at Pepperl & Fuchs, they have several items that can do this. At our training this week they showed us a new RFID tag that is smaller than a dime.
