1997 Ford Falcon EL - Wiring Problem or Short Circuit?

11/15/2009 11:48 PM

I have an intriguing issue...

I recently removed an aftermarket Electric Trailer Brake Unit (ETBU) from a friends car (97 Australian Ford Falcon). This was an accessory which I had fitted about 2 years before they bought the car from me.

They later indicated a problem since I had taken out the ETBU.

Seems that when the lights are on & you have your foot on the brakes, you cannot turn off the engine. Take your foot off the brakes, or sw off the lights & the engine will stop.

They told me that also the "Cruise control won't work". I determined that it will actually work, but not when the lights are on.

If you have the ignition on, the lights off, put your foot on the brakes, the dash lights come on.

I inspected the wiring where I had removed the ETBU & found no evidence of any problem.

(The unit has 4 wires, two wires are spliced onto the brake switch wire, and a +12V power wire which is live only when the ignition is on, the other two are a ground or earth to the chassis, & the last one is a wire which is run all the way to the trailer plug at the towbar, which supplies power to the electric brakes on the trailer). The two wires which were spliced into are OK, not shorted, nor broken etc. The earth wire is removed & the brake power wire is taped & coiled up & tied out of harms way under the dash. I am suspecting this is a coincidence with the ETBU removal, but still is a bit of a puzzle.

I also discovered that the brake lights do not work (but have proven that the sw on the brake pedal is operating).

When I disconnected the wiring loom going to the RH rear brake light, the symptoms seem to dissappear. My next thought is that possibly the brake light lamp on RHS has shorted internally so that the tail light terminal is linked to the brake lamp terminal? This is a dual filament globe with 3 terminals, a common ground, a brake lamp & a tail lamp. But I realise unplugging the right lamp assembly may simply be interrupting the link from a problem elsewhare.

I can reason out the symptoms for the lights & cruise control issues, but can't work out why the engine won't turn off.

I have yet to remove & replace the lamps, as they were not easily accessible & I only had limited time when I first went to investigate.

Any thoughts, folks?

Disconnect the ground (-) cable at the battery then disconnect the power (+) cable, leave them disconnected overnight then reconnect.

The ECU/ECM will reset, then test.

Sounds like the light for the tail/brake is back-feeding to the hot side of the coil or the ignition switch. I would offer more help, but have no access to wiring for cars in other countries.

If someone has inserted a single contact bulb in the socket designed for a duel contact bulb, it will fed from one circuit to the other. I would be looking at the brake light bulb in the right rear before I started tearing out wires. Good luck.

I would look at the wiring harness under the dash for ANY loose ground wires or grounding points were several wires connect. Since you said you removed the ground wire from the etbc you may have inadvertently open a grounding path. Then when certain circuits are working there back feeding other circuits giving you weird symptoms you are seeing.

If you have a factory service manual or wiring diagram you may find the common grounding that ties the circuits together.

Good luck!

Yeah, thanks for the advice.

I plan to check the light bulbs in the brakes next. The ground wire which I removed was run from the -ve terminal of the ETBU and grounded under one of the mounting screws of the unit. So when I removed the unit the ground wire was taken with it, so I'm fairly confidant that I haven't disturbed another ground wire. BUT your point is well taken, I realise it could well be something like a floating ground!

I will advise when I finally work it out, but could be a while cause I'm away for some weeks.

I struck a few strange problems with fords in my years as an auto elec. Most strange problems could be traced back to earthing, especially between body and engine and from engine and body to battery. Suggest you check these by loosening connections and retightening

I know this thread is 4-5 years old, but I had this exact same problem. The cause was the RH rear stop/tail globe. The shirt filament had melted down and was touching the rear filament. Basically turning it into a single filament globe. Replacing this one globe fixed the issue. (12v 21/5W globe) $3.95 fix (for a pair) Thought I would just post my solution to the problem for any future GL-EF owners with the same issue. Cheers Hypnotech03
