Make? Why not buy from Halfords <usual disclaimer>?

The proper size cable depends on the length and the load.

As Mr. PW suggests, you should consider buying a set from your local supplier.

Be careful when buying. Cheap ones are usually too thin and all they do is get hot.

If you want to make your own, use old welding cable - magic, but heavy. Make long enough so that you do not have to aprk the cars one on to of the other.

If it's for a regular car or light truck, use at least 4 gauge (2 is better). If it's a big diesel or something with a dual battery set up, than use at least 0 and beef up the clamps too.

Thanks !

I can't believe why others advise to buy such a simple thing.

Thanks again for your information.
