Sweetest Engine in Sweetest Car - Only an Aussie Could Do This!

11/19/2009 7:40 PM

What's the sweetest sounding engine God and RR ever made? What's the baddest car the devil and Chevy ever made? It takes an Aussie to put them together, but here it is:

Nice chase, but I don't want the "Muscle" cars, want the green beatle that they passed 4 times! My assumption is that the beatle slowed down to let them catch up.

you see the same car at 3:33, 3:41, 4:00 an 4:11

OK, good spot - but 'fess up, cb, did you really spot it all on your own?

If you did, then kudos to you.

(Good clip - beetle or not - it was just the continuity guys screwing up).

Aye, but can you change the firing order to give it that sound?

Corners slightly better too I bet!

Ah, but I found my first great love in the back seat of a 55 Chevy (only a 265, I'm afraid). Try that in the back of a Mustang.

1650 Cubic inch 3000 Horse power! I like that!

5 years of full time work to build the frame? Did he spend the first 4 of it in college learning to weld first? Or else he is the greatest master of padding a time card ever!

5 months would be overkill on detailing time. 5 years is just screwing off!

And whats with all of the control switches? For a million dollar investment you would think they could have gotten a good electronics tech to simplify it down to a standard key switch.

Its beautifull and well engineered.

In the UK around 35-40 years ago a Guy built a saloon car and put a Merlin V12 engine in it. It was licensed for the road, but Rolls Royce made a fuss about it having their grill and the black RR on the front.....thats about all I remember....

I found a link that appears to tell the story of that car here (or one similar!!):-

Yeah, I know it's not practical and sort of a waste of time, but you guys have to know I'm a fool for that sound. Not long ago, I was near the county airport and I heard it! I went running outside, yelling for everybody to look. There were two old P51's with Merlins doing some sort of demo. Everybody pretty much thought me crazy. It's kinda the same with train whistles; I'll drive 50 miles just to hear an old steam whistle.

Oh God I want THAT '55 Chevy!!!!!!!!!!

There's nothing on this planet that is sweeter than the sound of an original Rolls Royce V12 Merlin engine in full supercharger boost!!!! I don't care what it is as nothing even comes close, bar none!

Short Story: I have had the privilege twice to have riden in P-51D mustangs, once back in '92 with a very good client and friend who lived outside Saratoga Springs NY, and again back in '98. The seconf flight was probably THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY LIFE, as I was able to snag a ride in a newly restored 1944 P-15D Mustang (there's a small jumper seat installed behind the pilot's seat where the original radio equipment was once installed in case you wondered how I got a ride) owned and flown by Frank Borman (yes, THAT Frank Borman, former NASA Astronaut & CEO Eastern Airlines). For several years Frank brought his aircraft to our annual "Wings of Eagles" airshow, including one year he brought his newly restored and mint N.A. F-86 Sabre. As a Member of the Airshow Planning Committee I was fortunate enough to have befriended this fine man. But that's another story. To this day, I considered that one single flight as THE ride of my lifetime! I say that even though I have had a backseater's ride in a General Dynamics F-16D Fighting Falcon piloted by my First Cousin, so that says a lot about Merlin-powered Mustangs!!!!! The sound that a Merlin makes at over 400 MPH inside the cockpit is something you will never forget the rest of your life! That engine purred like a kitten and was as smooth as silk, but it a was a snarling pussy cat just the same......

Just wanted to share with you all!

Signed, Former member of the now defunct National Warplane Museum (Geneseo & Elmira NY), and NWM Airshow Planning Committee Member.
