M.Tech in VLSI and Embedded Systems

11/20/2009 4:58 AM

Hi All,

I've a typical question regarding the choice of appropiate subjects @ M.tech/M.E level. I've done bachelor's degree in Electrical & Electronics engg. & have been working in IT field for the past two years. I thought of doing Part-time M.Tech from IIIT Hyderabad, India (http://www.iiit.net/academics/programmes/pgssp) as it is near my place & one of the good institute in my city/country. But, this being an IT ( Indian Institute of Information Technology) institute, they don't offer regular/conventional courses in Electrical Engineering. The most appropiate course seems to M.Tech in VLSI & Embedded Systems (http://www.iiit.net/admissions/course-offerings-2009-10).

So just wondering how difficult it would be for an Electrical engineer to do it?

In my graduation I had studied Basics of Microprocessors ( 8-bit & 16bit), Analog & Digitial Electronics, Linear Integrated Circuits( Op.amp apps., 555 timers etc), Digital Signal Processors etc. Ofcourse, treatment of all these was at elementary level!

Can you guys help me figure out how difficult/challenging it would be to do Master's in Embedded Syatems & VLSI considering that I would be doing it on Part-time basis while doing job?

Your opinion is awaited!

Thanks,

I am not an expert to answer your question. How ever in order to help you I have reproduced below comments from my daughter who hold a master degree in VLSI from IITD.

I hope the answer will be of use to you.

"Since you have background in some of the important subjects like digital/analog design, digital signal processors , it shpuld be fairly easy for you to do a masters in vlsi design. Ofcourse there will be many new concepts, but you should be ab;le to build it over the basics you have already learnt. You can in yoru free time read the following books which will help you a lot CMOS digitial design : Baker , Boyce and Li CMOS digital integrated circuits : Jan rabaey Semiconductor physics

High level design and modelling: gajski"

Good luck!

Thanks for your inputs! I never thought one would go & ask this question to somebody else on my behalf. What more, she even suggested books for me!

Thank You guys
