Heating a MS Ingots

11/21/2009 1:11 AM

-What quantity of heat is required( in Kilo calories) to heat a MS Ingots to1150 degrees celcius. The weight of the ingot is 102Kg.

-If the above is heated by Producer gas(Coal Gas), what would be the volume of gas required to heat the same through 1150 degrees celcius.

Specific heat of steel = 500 J /Kg/0K or 0.119 Kcal/Kg/oK

Rest of the data you have

The second part is a bit complicated- since here the heat losses and the heating system design comes into play, and you have to estimate based on this.

You can calculate that by knowing the specific heat of ingots. Of course you have to consider heat losses.

Regarding the gas quantity, it can be calculated by knowing the calorific value of the gas. Of course again considering the heat losses.

Required heat can be calculated Q = m C DT where m is mass, C is Sp heat and DT is the temperature difference. Use proper units. Divide this heat by the calorific value of the gas will give you the required quality of gas. (Without considering losses). You may have to consider suitable factors for all type of losses.
