Help with a toroid

11/25/2009 2:12 PM

I found some toroid cores (they were labeled "iron powder", but that was hand-written, so...) The markings say "A4088-02EE" and (on the other side) "4G-L 9972" The OD is 2.4", the ID 1.4" and the hgt about 1.2". The epoxy is a light chocolate.

Does anyone recognize anything at all about these? I suspect they might date back to the 1960s. The numbers don't look like Arnold or Magnetics, the only two I'm still familiar with.

OK, the other shoe. I need some inductors. So, I'm winding one of these beasts with some 22 AWG to see what kind of AL I get. I think the last time I handwound a toroid must have been pre-arthritis. I made a little shuttle out of a fork and that's OK, but I'm running close to 30 seconds a turn. If I need a couple hundred turns, I may grow old and die on this! Anybody got a better idea on winding this?

Just in case this isn't obvious:-

Anybody got a better idea on winding this?

Use multi-strand (flexible) wire.

I think I'm gonna run into a build problem if I do that. I thought about it. Thanks. Happy Thanksgiving.

The chocolate color may not be an epoxy. They may be ferrite toroids. Have you checked either Ferroxcube or Fair-Rite? Both have been in business for a long time.

If they are ferrite, the energy transfer will depend on the material formula. It could be very lossy.

Thanks. Neither company seems to recognize the part number. Yeah, I'm gambling on the losses. I'd prefer some nice MPP cores for this, but these beasts are what I've got free. I'm probably gonna run about 5 kHz if everything works out, so the losses might be OK. I just have no clue about µ at that low a frequency. Oh, well, I'll check these out on Tuesday and post the results.
