From Wikipedia

"When considering the application with combustible products, the greatest benefit is process safety. Since fuels require oxygen to combust, reduced oxygen content in the vapor space lowers the risk of unwanted combustion."

Good answer! But I think blanketing is the same thing we do to some large aircraft. As fuel is consumed from the tanks it is flooded with nitrogen gas to prevent flammable mixtures.

Because LPG is pressurized I would guess your client requests this for used tanks being shipped?

I do not think that the Wiki reference given by MetalSmith is relevant in this case as you are referring to a pressure vessel and a substance stored at its vapour pressure, whereas that article refers to tanks.

LPG vessels do not need to be "blanketed" as LPG is stored under pressure and the entire space above the liquid is filled with LPG vapour.

Nitrogen (or water or some other inert gas) is used to purge the vessel of any air prior to filling. The Nitrogen is then displaced by LPG vapour before liquid LPG is introduced. (You need to do this to prevent very low temperatures occuring that could lead to brittle fracture). In this way there is never any air/LPG flammable vapour available in the vessel.

In some older installations, LPG vapour is used to displace the air before introducing liquid LPG, but this is not a good practice as at some stage there will be a flammable vapour in the vessel and there will be a flammable vapour being vented.

I guess your client wants facilities to nitrogen "purge" the vessel to render it air (oxygen) free prior to introducing LPG vapour

It displaces oxygen ordinarily present in air, and so minimises the risk of spontaneous catastrophic self-disassembly of the vessel in the event of an incendive event taking place within it. With LPG, as with other non-ionic liquids, static electric discharges are high on the list of several possibilities that would initiate such an event. In the absence of oxygen, the event cannot occur as no combustion could take place.

dear,

nitrogen gas is an innert gas and it is created innert atmosphere when it is spread in particular area,it can prevent fire fight.therefore it can use for shield the LPG storage vessel and prevent from fire or ignition because of LPG is a highly inflammable gas,it can use as a blanket for LPG tanks.

thanks
