In-line cartridge filter

11/27/2009 12:40 PM

Good day to all and a happy Thanksgiving to many.

I am again faced with a technical term used by Canada Customs in the tariff for which they supply no definition. Can you good people help me out?

In-line cartridge filter. (for water)

I would assume just from the name that to qualify for this tariff the goods will.

  1. Have a replaceable "cartridge" much like the one in my car's air filter.
  2. It must filter the water as is passes straight down the "line". By this I mean there is no diversion into a separate tank or device for filtering and then returning the water to the line.

Based on my above assumtions as to what the paper pushers who wrote the tariff ment. I would not classify the M100 pistonless water filter shown here as an In-line cartridge filter.

Am I right?

I agree - not a cartridge filter (whether in-line or not). The Filtomat brochure describes the operation, which is a self-cleaning system - automatically back-flushing the filter element when it becomes clogged. There is no replaceable cartridge.

This is not a cartridge filter. And, it is not for water.

Cheers.

"And, it is not for water."

Beg to differ. Extract from Filtomat M100 brochure:

"The filtration process begins when raw water flows through the filter inlet (1) into the coarse screen (2).
Here, the water is pre-filtered in order to protect the cleaning mechanism from large debris. The water then passes
through the inner surface of the fine screen..."

Partly right, the filter medium is replaceable though not necessary in normal operation. Unless this designation raises inopportune exception I'd grin and bare it

It is in line & it does have a cartridge element [filter basket].

The filter is set up to be serviced without interrupting service.

the filter element is not normally replaced, but cleaned [scale removed].

This is not an inline cartridge filter. An inline cartridge filter uses a cartridge not a wire screen. Replacement of such cartridges is extremely easy and the cartridges are usually disposed of, not cleaned, but this is not to say that some people don't try to clean and reuse them. The ones that I have come in contact with can be used for more than water, including some very high viscosity stuff, depending on which filter element you choose.

Keywalker

Thanks to all who replied.

The winner is ......... based on majority replies.

It is a filter, probably "in-line" but not a cartridge.

Voting is now closed.

Unfortunately, you have to think like a Canadian Customs agent. It's a filter so it fits the definition.
