"It is required by US law that all 1996 + cars and light vans/trucks sold in the USA must be OBD II compliant and this includes all Asian and European vehicles.
A small number of 1994 & 1995 vehicles are OBD II compliant. To verify you need to check the Vehicle Emission Control Information [VECI] label which is located under the hood near the radiator of most vehicles. If compatible the labels states "OBD II certified". Additional government regulations state that all OBD II compliant vehicles must have a "common" 16 pin Data Link Connector [DLC]."
and a reference to the possibility of 2 PLUGS .
One a factory 20 pin and the second a 16 pin Data Link Connector.
Check to see if your vehicle is OBD II compliant and if it is I'd suggest a search for the that second plug.
The 96 sportage uses the 16 pin OBD2 DLC plug. The OBD2 rules say that the plug is supposed to be located in reach of the driver when they are setting in the drivers seat. In this vehicle the DLC plug is located under the dash, right above the gas pedal. On the 96 Sportage, there are only a few pids of information on the generic side. If you want more information, you will need an enhanced scan tool to get that information. Using stored codes to diagnose problems with, without the enhanced data will many times lead you down a long dark alley.
