Antique Brass Terminal Thingy

12/01/2009 8:38 AM

I want to build some vintage vacuum tube projects, and I'm trying to find those old brass wire connectors that those of us of a certain age might have used in dusty old college basement labs. They would have a hole to accept a wire, and a knurled knobbed screw that went perpendicular into the hole to hold the wire. Does anyone have any ideas? I've tried a lot of online antique radio sites but all I can find is plastic terminals and fahnestock clips.

no no no - I want to buy some. I have several projects in mind. And they would all have to be the same kind across all the projects. I have issues like that.

Why don't you ask Time? He's recreating a model of the famous H.G. Wells time machine from the classic 1960s movie, so he obviously knows where to purchase such brass components.

Well, I think this is what you are after...

Check out item BP30GP10, bottom of page 3. It is a brass cap binding post... nickel plated, though.

Check the price on these guys! I should maybe dig out mine (not as fancy as these, though) and put them on e-bay?

Those brass binding posts sure look neat. Trouble is they scream "I'm something new like billet parts on an antique hot rod"

Failing a big enough project budget you can probably find brass thumb nuts in the antique car and motorcycle subculture for spark coils from the 1920's and 30's. Chances are the price will be in the same $2-$3 range from dealers. But you could make the rest of it out of brass screws, nuts and washers by drilling the right size hole for the wire (kind of a fussy job; you file a flat in just the right place, centerpunch it and hope the drill goes through fairly in the center).

I occasionally search ebay for "brass nuts" and have turned up quantities of small knurled thumb nuts for good prices. Here's 4 for $2 plus $1.50 s&h:

Item number: 270487842018

Same guy sells 25 for $10 plus $3 s&h

Didn't you see my comment on patina? By the way, for $2 each, I can make them look 80 years old.

Hi TVP45,

Great thought on the Patina of any brass to make it look old.

I find a copper brass mix also helps as it gives a 'rose' gold kind of colour, which is not so 'in your face' as bright yellow brass?

Good luck, and happy holidays for all as well

And, of course, I have a couple (not the nice ones like that, but the ones that use spade lugs) that I still have around "for when I need them".

I love that old stuff. It was so damn well-made! It showed attention to detail and was really a joy to use. (Mutters incoherently about damn whipper-snappers not being able to send e-mail on 5-tube ac/dc radio, trips over cane, loses dentures in fall, can't find tri-focals to find teeth. Crap!)

I thought these were expensive until I looked up the price of some of the others suggested here - $10 - $30 each!

I guess I'll email the old geezer and see if he's still in business.

A dip into ascorbic acid will tarnish brass for that antique appeal.

Any stained glass supply offers a variety of patina-ing agents for use on brass window came - you can turn it black or even copper color.

But I likes mine all shiny.

To get a genuine patina try thr following method: Do this outside.

1. Plastic container with lid of suffecient size to contain object(s).

2. Clorine tablet for swimming pool. 3" ones can be bought at supply store or hardware store.

3. Clear amonia.

Chop off a chunk of tablet about 1 tsp in size. DO NOT TOUCH WITH BARE HANDS!

Place object in container atop somthing to keep it off the bottom.

Add clorine tab and equal part amonia and cover. The clorine will liberate into gas form and leave a nice patina after 8 hrs. The longer the exposure the thicker the patina. Open outside when done and rinse gently under cool water.

Is that terminal that someone posted an image of the item you want? If not, the following might, maybe help. It is stuff for restoration of antique cars; I didn't see anything I thought would work unless you also need wire, but they have lots of things I haven't seen anywhere else.

Restoration Supply Co, 15182B Highland Valley Rd, Escondido, CA 92025; phone 800-306-7008; web www.RestorationStuff.com, email info@RestorationStuff.com.
