Sandblasting Media for Casting Zamak #3

12/02/2009 3:53 AM

Customer asks to do sandblasting for the casting Zamak #3 components to get uniform texture after chrome plating. The components are made by traditional casting machine. We have issues as below: 1). Which kind of media we can choose? 2). Which grit we can choose? Currently we chose the 30 grit and 80 grit aluminum oxide, 30# grit can hide many defects from casting such as dent, scrath and marks, 80# can hide cold flow mark from casting. Each of them has brightness issue after plating and we can not get uniform texture. So we change to 30 or 80 grit glass bead which can solve brightness/uniform texture issue, but it can not hide the cold flow marks from casting.

Hello Fisher Yu,

I'm not completely clear. Sorry. When you say, "Customer asks to do sandblasting for the casting Zamak #3 components to get uniform texture after chrome plating."

Is this, "...sandblasting for the casting Zamak #3 components...," supposed to be smoothing the finish in order to get a uniform texture in *prepration* for the chrome to follow, which needs a smooth enough surface on which to plate?

Or, is it for polishing the chrome plated surface after (or do you do 'some before,' and some after')?

Thanks.

Hello Rob,

First, the components should be chrome plated.

Second, customer expects texture on the product. They don't care which kind of texture but asks it is consistent. They just note "sandblasting before chrome plating" in the drawing.

Third, polishing process is not availiable because the complex profile of the components and we can not ensure the uniform smoothness.

Thanks.

Fisher
