12/02/2009 5:04 AM

Hello,

Please i need information on pipeline offtakes. What are the major issues a design engineer should consider when installing offtake points on a pipeline?

Thanks

Scorpiohams,

You are new to this site and I suspect that you are also new to the "Piping" world. If not true then please accept my apologies.

First, some terminology.

"Offtakes" is not a proper piping term. I think you mean "Branch Connection" as in connecting a NPS 10" (DN250) branch to a NPS 20" (DN500) header or main line.

The major issues include:

  • The maximum operating pressure
  • The maximum operating temperature
  • The commodity
  • The wall thickness of the header
  • New construction vs. new branch to existing header
  • Tie-In status (Cold Tie-In or Hot-Tap Tier-In)
  • The available options (unreinforced stub-in. reinforced stub-in, TEE, Weld-O-Let, split Tee)

You are right on both counts and thanks for your response.

The term "offtakes" seems to be acceptable in the "gas piping" world. My lecturers use it regularly and a lot of articles on gas transportation too.

Your correction is noted though.

Thanks again
