Do you prefer Linix to Windows to get free software?

01/12/2007 10:37 PM

Having had my fill of windows problems that I can't resolve, I have installed Edubunto Linix at my son's suggestion. All versions of Linix are free, and have free software such as OpenOffice with a spreadsheet, music and video, and more. I am using it now with Mozilla Firefox as the internet explorer.

I assume thet Edubunto is named for it's educational software and games. I tried one that has you assemble atoms to make molecules. Excellent!

One problem with Firefox is that I can't log onto CR4, even if I run it from windows. CR4 will not accept my logon or password when I use it. Could it be that CR4 uses windows software for their servers? Try Linux, it is the most common system used on servers, and it's free.

I still have my windows system installed. Linix has a partitioner that allowed me to use part of the hard disk for Linix and leave part of it alone. It can read and write to the windows portion if it's Fat32, and can read from NTFS format.

The claim is that Linix is much less susceptible to viruses and worms, so it's the thing to use for the internet. I'm excited at the possibilities.

Good for you!

Windows is overpriced and Macroshaft is only getting more ambitiously monopolistic.

When I built my current machine a little over a year ago, I set it up as usual with System Commander as my boot manager and reserved 75 GB on my first drive in anticipation of installing a version of Linux at some point rather than two or more versions of windows or before that windows and DOS. Currently I only have XP Pro installed but maybe its time I gave a version of Linux a shot to at least play around with and get familiar with it.

I have to use XP because of the programs I need but you better believe I'm rooting for Linux to grow, or some other real competition to windows to come along.

You heard right about viruses and worms and Linux is much less susceptible for two reasons: First, to be fair to windows, that is what most computers run so that makes it the obvious target. But the second thing is Macroshaft's fault for pushing their monopoly and trying to be all things to all users and consequently, with so many functions deeply intertwined in their bloated code they have created endless vulnerabilities for hackers to find and exploit.

Ive been running Xandros for 6 mo, and its pretty good.

I can also multi boot XP, but only do so about one a mo.

I only drop back to XP for the occasional app that hasnt a counterpart in linux, or

if i cant get the linux app to install properly.

This is one area of linux that needs a little work.

So far, firefox has had no compatibility issues.

I can login here as well.

Based on my experience, i dont think I ll be upgrading to,

wasting time / money on Vista.

Linux is 1/3 of the XP's bloat and FAR less than what vista will take.

Maybe ive become an ex windoze weenie?!

Now, ive just gotta learn where linux puts every thing.

I've been using different versions of Linux for several years now. As far as software is concerned, I've always been able to find equivalents to windows ones except for some high-end stuff like Autodesk Inventor (which is what we use where I work).

I tried both SUSE and Mandriva recently, but networking and a couple other things did not work right away for me, so I tried Fedora Core 5. Everything worked perfectly, except that it takes a little work to get additional hard drives set up properly.

I recently heard good things about Ubuntu, so I started using it this weekend. So far, I think this is the best Linux version I have come across. Installing programs is very simple, the network connected without modifying any settings, etc.

I used to use a dual boot system, but I've now changed all of my drives to ext3, so I no longer have to deal with the NTFS write problem.

Good luck, I think you'll stay hooked if you keep using it.

Buy a Mac and use it for 90% of your computer activity and you can install linux or windows for the other 10%. Ninety percent of your headaches will disappear instantly.

Hi: I am using Mozilla and have no problem with CR4. I think this software is almost full compatible with IE from Macroshat (I read this nick for the first time in this place and make me laugh).

Perhaps there is some problem with the settings (i.e you have to accept cookies).

Regards

I've been using FireFox on Windows XP for a while now. I think you have to alow pop ups for thise particular site, or adjust your settings as mentioned earlier. FireFox is great in that it lets you know what it's doing; if it has blocked something there is typically a bar just below the standard toolbar (mine is a pale yellow color) that says it blocked a popup... If you right click on it it will give you some options.

I use Fedora core 5 with Firefox 1.5.

I have no login issues at all.

It must be in your settings or a bug in the Edubunto compile.
