Directional Protection Relays

12/04/2009 3:37 PM

Can someone please explain to me how the direction of a protection relay is determined. My understanding is that a voltage input is required for directional relays, but since a VT does not have a 'P1' and 'P2' on its primary, how do you connect it such that you realise the direction you want.

The PT from Europe has polarity marker with P1 and P2, but American (ANSI) has marker with white dot, and for HV side H1 and H2, for LV side with X1 and X2. If there is no marker, we have to test the correct polarity. There are several ways to test the PT aand CT polarity.

Both CT and PT polarities are important for Directional relay.

How to connect the CT and PT to the relay, please follow the relay instruction manual.
